What is AZA SAFE?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction program is a coordinated effort of accredited zoos and aquariums to save the most vulnerable wildlife species from extinction. We are focusing our collective expertise within AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, while leveraging our massive audiences to save species.

SAFE Shark and Ray has developed an ambitious plan that involves raising awareness, supporting international conservation efforts, engaging in fisheries policy, and providing a link between animals in our care and wild populations.

Who is involved?

SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction joins together the 180 million annual zoo and aquarium visitors with the resources and collective expertise of AZA member organizations and conservation partners to save the most vulnerable wildlife species from extinction. Prioritizing conservation nd saving vulnerable wildlife, while protecting them for future generations, using the combined resources and collective expertise of AZA members and partners. You can review all of our SAFE Shark and Ray partners by visiting our Partners page.

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are on the frontlines of animal care and leaders in the protection of animal species. In fact, our zoos and aquariums make up the largest collective group of life scientists in the world. Our expertise in wild animal management, care, research, and education is a vital resource for animal conservation. AZA zoos and aquariums invest over $200 million dollars annually in wildlife conservation and field research.

What other SAFE programs are there?

As of February 2024, there are 41 designated SAFE programs and growing! You can see the full list of SAFE species here.

Why sharks and rays?

A third of all shark and ray species are threatened with extinction, with the primary threat being overfishing and destructive fishing practices. Inadequate governance and ineffective fisheries management is enabling the depletion of populations across the world’s ocean. Capitalizing on the expertise of zoo and aquarium professionals who care for these species, we are able to apply vital links and knowledge about the species in our care to their wild counterparts, create connections between field researchers and conservation and research teams at our partner facilities, while leveraging our massive audiences to engage in conservation actions to protect these animals in the wild.

How can I help sharks and rays?

Overfishing and bycatch issues can be addressed by purchasing sustainable seafood and participating in advocacy efforts supporting strong, science-based management. You can also help by donating to shark conservation organizations like SAFE Shark and Ray, visiting AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums (Your ticket supports conservation!), and making conscious consumer purchases that are wildlife and environmentally friendly.

As you watch shark shows and movies, you have an opportunity to choose programming that portrays sharks in a positive light and focuses on the benefits of protecting and conserving these incredible animals. Check out our tips for how to view SharkFest and Shark Week responsibly.
